Surface at Strathnairn

'Surface by Ossian Desmond-Jones'.

The exhibition consists of twelve photographs on the theme of 'surface', in particular the surfaces of trees in my area when exposed to rain.

The overcast or rainy conditions provide a completely different kind of light that is flat and even, so surfaces tend to appear much duller. However, when water flows across some of these surfaces they suddenly respond boldly in a way differing greatly from being under strong sunlight.

Colours that are often subtle or hidden are suddenly brought to the fore, completely changing the palette. The way the water travels along a surface selectively brings these changes into stark contrast.

These differences highlight faces of our environs that we may otherwise take for granted. The intention of this exhibition is to provide a glimpse into a world that is emergent yet temporary.

From Monaro to the Coast

A group exhibition by The Gumnuts.

The Gumnuts is a collective of enthusiastic artists who meet regularly in the Village Hall at Strathnairn Arts to paint in a supportive atmosphere.

This exhibition features works which have been inspired by the sparseness of the landscape afflicted by die-back in and around Cooma and the changes from there to the bounty of the Australian coast.

Selected Spaces. Settling the Ginninderra District

In the 1860's and 1870's - long before the suburbs came, "selectors" chose blocks of land to build a home and a farm, and gradually, a community . Early maps and plans will help show how six pioneering families made Ginninderra home - before it was all taken from them. The stories of these settler families are well illustrated with photographs, maps and plans.
