Sutton: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Kowen Pine Forest

Kowen Forest is very popular for orienteering, bush walking, running, mountain bike and horse riding.

From the Molonglo Gorge Recreation Area, a 2.5 kilometre walking trail follows the river to a small grassed picnic area called Blue Tiles. There is no drinking water available at Blue Tiles, so ensure you take sufficient water with you.

Glenburn heritage precinct is 3.7 kilometres walking distance from the Old Kowen Homestead, heading back along Kowen Road and then connecting with Fernside Road heading south, then on to Charcoal Kiln Road.

Kowen Forest is a commercial pine plantation. You may encounter forestry operations or heavy machinery. For your own safety, please adhere to all signage and avoid closed areas of the forest.

Kowen Forest is locked to vehicles. Motor bike riding and 4WD is prohibited without a permit. Contact Access Canberra for full details.

Pialligo Redwood Forest

See Walter Burley Griffin's grove of majestic Redwood trees. Take the self-guided tour along the three kilometre walking track or just relax and enjoy a picnic.

The redwoods were planted against the advice of Canberra's Arborist, Thomas Charles Weston. Only 3,000 of the original 122,000 planted survived. Despite this, the forest holds the important title of Australia's largest stand of mature Redwood species.

The Pialligo Redwood Forest is registered on the Commonwealth Heritage List.

In order to protect the Redwoods' shallow root systems, neither bicycles nor vehicles are allowed in the forest. Dogs on leads are permitted.

Googong Foreshores

The Googong Foreshore area is ideal for sightseeing, fishing, bushwalking, picnicking, canoeing and sailing.

Swimming is restricted to downstream of the weir wall only near the picnic areas and camping is not permitted.

Googong Foreshores is located 10 kilometres south of Queanbeyan and the London Bridge area is a further 16 kilometres south towards Burra. The dam wall is 62 metres high and the spillway can be viewed from a car park at the northern end. It is the water catchment area for Canberra and Queanbeyan, a recreation area for public use and a wildlife refuge.

London Bridge Arch is an interesting limestone formation, formed when water flowing along Burra Creek leaked through cracks in the limestone. These cracks were enlarged as the limestone was dissolved and worn away, forming caves and eventually the London Bridge Arch.

Tex Perkins and Matt Walker

It's understandably difficult to pull together a coherent picture of a man whose career has taken in everything from the groundbreaking experimental punktonica of Sydney mid-80s noiseniks Thug to the lilting, dark country of his recent material with the Dark Horses.

From the hard edged pub rock of the Beasts Of Bourbon's, a snarling slice of filthy pub rock to the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea, whose extraordinary 1991 single 'This Is Not The Way Home' placed Perkins' world-weary growl in a new musical context and heralded the emergence of an entirely original yet archetypically Australian sound.

Now is Tex's exciting new (and long over due) collaboration with Matt Walker (a great artist in his own right) for duo shows. It's a blues swamp-groove kinda thing that's a little reminiscent of some of the things in Tex's back catalogue. Many new originals inhabit the setlist, but see them now while they still have to flesh out the set with a few Cruel Sea covers!
