Geurie

Midway between Dubbo and Wellington, the small Mitchell Highway town of Geurie is only eight kilometres from the Scabbing Flat Fall reach of the Macquarie River, where there are some good picnic spots.

Geurie has a regional reputation for the quality of its art and craft stores, one of which is named, irresistibly, Aladdins Cave.

The drive from Geurie to the world-renowned Western Plains Zoo on the southern outskirts of Dubbo takes only a few minutes.

Less than half an hour in the car will also take you to the lookout and bushwalks in the Mt Arthur Reserve and to Wellington and the magnificent caves system. The caves not only attract hordes of visitors, but have produced important bones and fossils of giant mammals which roamed here in pre-historic times.

The drive from Geurie to the caves, of course, takes you through Wellington, whose fine old buildings certainly demand a stopover, while a short detour along the road to Parkes leads to the Glenfinlass Cellars whose tasting room is open on Saturdays or by appointment.
