Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills might not share much in common with its namesake Californian city of tinselled stardom, but this Cooks River suburb to the south of Sydney can lay claims to closer ties to English folklore.

The first pub in the district gloried in the name of The Robin Hood and Little John Inn, while the area now known as Beverly Hills has long had an association with the sport of kings, horse-racing.

The council archives record that 'a mile of racecourse' once extended over an area now occupied by the Beverly Hills railway station. Nearby racing these days is confined to Canterbury Racecourse.

Sydney's southern beaches, including Coogee, Maroubra and Cronulla are within half an hour's drive of Beverly Hills.

Even closer to the south are the local reaches of the Georges River system - Salt Pan Creek, Lime Kiln, Jew Fish, Gungah and Oakley bays. The river shores are fronted by generous expanses of parkland and there are several boat ramps where fishermen and recreational sailors can launch their craft.
