Burwood

The inner-western suburb of Burwood is just 11km by train from Sydney's Central Station. The suburb is also flanked to the north and south by two of the major connection roads with the city, Parramatta Road and Liverpool Road (Hume Highway).

Burwood is one of those central suburbs which has been shaped by time and location in the development and growth of Australia's first and largest city.

Because most of the subdivision which transformed the area from semi-rural and market gardens to residential took place over the turn of the 19th century, Burwood is characterised by large, family-style Federation and post-Federation homes.

Over recent years these older homes have been targeted for renovation and redevelopment as the Sydney real estate market has outstripped the rest of Australia.

Covering just 7sqkm and looking after the affairs of 27,000 residents, the Burwood Council is one of the smallest in the Sydney metropolitan region. But, the area having been settled in the 1790s, it is one of the few councils in Australia which can look back on more than 200 years of continuous development.
