St Stephens Catholic Cathedral

St Stephens Catholic Cathedral in Brisbane city is a 19th Century, neo-Gothic building with a modern extension built in 1989. The cathedral houses striking sculptures and a memorable collection of nineteenth century stained glass windows from Germany, France, England and Ireland. The neighbouring Pugin Chapel was Queensland's first church and was built in 1850.

The cathedral takes its name from the 'cathedra' or bishop's seat, symbol of the chief pastor and teacher of the local Church. In the cathedral, parish communities find a sign of their fellowship with each other and the expression of their unity with the Church throughout the world. The cathedral is therefore not only an important place for those who use it regularly, but for the whole city of Brisbane as it provides a sanctuary and an oasis of green that invites people to rest awhile. St Stephens can also be used as a unique wedding venue.

MacArthur Museum

The Macarthur Museum is a gallery dedicated to Brisbane's involvement in World War II. Visit the museum to learn about General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in the South West Pacific, who used what is now the MacArthur Museum as his base for steering one of the largest wartime campaigns in history.

Discover Brisbane's wartime heritage from 1939 - 1945, a crucial period in Australia's history. Visit the office of General Douglas MacArthur, Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces in the South West Pacific Area. Sit at the table where MacArthur and his staff developed strategies to win the war.

Experience life in Brisbane during the dark days of war when people feared that the city might be invaded, public air raid shelters lined the streets and children wore identity discs. Read the Courier Mail and see what Brisbane people woke up to every day.

Feel what life was like for Brisbanites when thousands of American and Australian troops inhabited camps around the city, parading through the streets and filling the shops, cafes and pubs. This was the world of our parents and grandparents. See it at the Macarthur Museum Brisbane.

Brisbane City and Surrounds: Travel Tips

Weather Guide
Brisbane temperature average:
Summer 21ºC to 30ºC
Autumn 15ºC to 28ºC
Winter 11ºC to 22ºC
Spring 14ºC to 26ºC

What to Bring
Most Queenslanders dress informally, although reasonable dress standards are maintained in restaurants, hotels and bars. Lightweight clothing is suitable all year round, however bring something warm to slip on, as the temperature drops at night during winter. To ensure adequate protection from the sun we suggest you bring a broad-brimmed hat, SPF 30+ sunscreen, sunglasses and a long sleeved shirt with a collar.

Beach Safety
Queensland has some of the world’s best beaches, however care and caution should be exercised at all times. Please remember to swim between the red and yellow flags and listen to instructions from lifesavers and lifeguards.
