Arthurton

Fifteen kilometres north of Maitland, Arthurton is a small country town in the centre of the Yorke Peninsula. It services cereal growers working some of Australia's richest soils in the state's mid-North.

The town developed in the twilight of the 19th century and buildings such as the original council chambers, which are now used as community meeting rooms, and the Uniting and Catholic churches are all centenarians.

Arthurton, an inland town, is nevertheless just a half-hour drive from good fishing spots such as Moonta Bay and Wallaroo on the Spencer Gulf and Port Clinton and Price on the eastern shores of Gulf St Vincent.

It is a similar drive to the largest local town of Maitland which sits on a ridge overlooking Spencer Gulf and the Yorke Valley and is at the junction of roads leading directly to resort and fishing towns on both Yorke Peninsula coasts.

Arthurton is also just a half hour"s drive from the major centre of Moonta which has an absorbing museum and many historic homes and churches directly linked to the Cornish and, to a lesser extent, Welsh miners who were imported in droves in the 1850s to work the huge copper deposits.
