Strathalbyn

After running your eye over the names of the town itself, of St Andrews Church and historic stone and slate Mackereth Cottage, you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that Strathalbyn has a Celtic heritage.

The first Scottish settlers arrived in this coach-stop corner of the Fleurieu Peninsula in 1839 and within a few years the town's future had already been underpinned by local dairy producers.

Regarded as one of South Australia's most attractive towns, Strathalbyn's unrivalled centrepiece is the Soldiers Memorial Garden. Flanking the gently flowing Angas River the park invites you to share a picnic with the ducks or just take time out to make peace with the world.

The town is studded with some fine old blue and sandstone heritage buildings and the district museum occupies the original police station and courthouse complex.

Fifty-eight kilometres south of Adelaide, Strathalbyn is close to the natural gems of the Coorong.
