Kingston

Once a holiday beach resort for jaded city folk, Kingston has been absorbed into the southern suburban fringes of Hobart since the development of the Southern Outlet Road.

The urban sprawl, however, has not detracted from the scenic delights of the coastal drive through Blackmans Bay, which boasts a small blow-hole, Tinderbox and Howden or the magnificent views of Droughty Point and Bruny Island from Piersons Point.

The Alum Cliffs walkway also offers some eminently photographic views, while the Federal Government's local Antarctic research headquarters feature a permanent public display.

Over the years Kingston has developed a magnetism for celebrated authors. Nobel Prize winner Patrick White occasionally drew on his childhood memories of holidays spent with his mother and his sister at Kingston Beach, while American novelist Jack London was a guest in a local hotel in January 1909.
