Boort

Located on a system of lakes, Boort is known among the locals both as the Northern Oasis because of its water riches and as Kakadu of the South due to its abundant birdlife. The name Boort is taken from the Aboriginal words for 'smoke on the hill'.

The region offers an attractive, alternative route from Echuca and Mildura to Melbourne.

The lakes provide a wide range of leisure activities including water-sports, fishing for trout and redfin and bird-watching, while the Heritage Lake Walk is both informative and educational. Significant Aboriginal middens, camp and spiritual sites are dotted among the stands of black box which hug the shorelines.

The Boort Historical Museum, which occupies the town"s original court house, displays a comprehensive collection of material which also reflects life in the district from pre-white settlement until the present time.

Boort is also the proposed site for the world's longest tortoise-proof fence.
