St Arnaud

The town of St Arnaud is located on the Sunraysia Highway between Donald and Avoca.

The gold rush of the 1850s and a long-term mining industry has bequeathed the town a rich lode of substantial buildings distinguished by their iron-lace decorations. Many of these buildings are protected by the National Trust.

The other distinctive feature about the town and the district is the bushland setting which provides habitat for many native plants and animals.

There is excellent fishing in the Avoca River, in nearby Teddington Reservoir and Lake Batyo Cato, 35km to the north-west. Located off the road between St Arnaud and Inglewood, the Melville Caves were a favourite hideaway of bushranger Captain Melville.

Above all, this is a town which lives the essential history of the goldfields and this heritage, coupled with a fine cuisine and excellent accommodation, makes St Arnaud the perfect stopover on the journey between Melbourne and Mildura.
