Whittlesea
The City of Whittlesea stretches from the north-east suburban fringes of Greater Melbourne into the semi-rural tranquillity of the Plenty Valley and Plenty Ranges.
The core of the Whittlesea ward in the municipality is about 35km from the Melbourne CBD. And befitting its rural, residential character, Whittlesea hosts a large, annual Country Music Festival in February and a traditional Agricultural Show every November.
Held in the Showgrounds, the show gives the community an opportunity to celebrate the "harvest" with displays of arts and craft, fireworks, vintage machinery, equestrian events and, of course, the obligatory sideshow alley.
A wide range of attractions and activities await the visitor who can enjoy the serenity of the Yan Yean Reservoir Park, explore the region on horseback by following the riding trails through the foothills and valleys or step up the excitement level at the Alpine Toboggan Park.
The region is also a favourite haunt of craft market browsers, fresh produce buyers and food and wine fanciers who can take their pick of a la carte restaurant or country pub fare.
