Eildon

Eildon's prime location on the banks of Victoria's largest water storage reservoir makes this small town, 140km east of Melbourne, a mecca for trout fishermen and boating enthusiasts.

Lake Eildon's shoreline stretches for 415km and its capacity of 2.3 million megalitres means that it holds five times as much water as Sydney Harbour.

The restocking of this large waterway with fingerlings from the State Fish Hatchery at Snob's Creek makes the lake irresistible to anglers. The vacation and adventure choices on and round Lake Eildon include houseboat holidays and fishing and bushwalking campouts.

Visitors can explore Victoria's inland waters at the Freshwater Discovery Centre whose aquarium offers face-to-face encounters with a wide variety of freshwater critters including crayfish, frogs, fish and turtles.

The lake is the centrepiece of the Lake Eildon National Park which stretches over 27,750ha of Victoria"s Central Highlands. The park is laced with a wide range of walking tracks and nature trails which snake through an ever-changing landscape.

Some of the trails are suitable for mountain bikes, trail bikes and 4WDs. A number of camping grounds are scattered throughout the park.
