Places nearby Eskdale

Anglers are on to a winner when they visit Laurel Hill Trout Farm in the small Mitta Valley town of Eskdale. If they fail to land a fish, the trout farmers will sell them one freshly caught by an expert.

Serious anglers will find all the challenges they desire from the banks of the Little Snowy Creek which runs right through the town.

Although it has not been re-stocked since 1969, the mountain stream occasionally surrenders brown trout up to 1.7kg, the odd rainbow and plenty of redfin and river blackfish.

This is high country trekking territory and you can join the Alpine Walking Track, which passes over Mt Willis, to the south of Mitta Mitta. The 4km Eskdale Spur bush walk leads from Camp Creek on a 800-metre climb to the summit of Victoria's highest peak, the 1986m Mt Bogong.

The major centre in the surrounding dairy country is Tallangatta, which lies 33km north of Eskdale. This Murray River town is the home of the Australian Red Breed Society which was formed to promote red dairy cattle breeds throughout the world.
