Tangambalanga

The tiny, Kiewa Valley twin townships of Kiewa and Tangambalanga lie just south of the lower arm of Lake Hume on the border of the Indigo Shire. This is prime dairy country and Tangambalanga, which takes its name from the Aboriginal word for the white-clawed lobster, is home to about 360 people, one-third of whom are employed by the local milk treatment plant, the Murray Goulburn Factory. The nearest major centre, Wodonga, is about 20km to the north. Stretches of the Kiewa River offer fine fishing and so, too, do the waters of the Hume Weir, just a few kilometres to the north. And travel a little further north and you'll come to the weirdly-designed Ettamogah Pub which has been enshrined in Oz folklore through the pen of cartoonist Ken Maynard. Tangambalanga stands at the northern entrance to the stunningly beautiful Kiewa River Valley which stretches south 90km to Mt Beauty at the foot of a steep 35km climb to the Falls Creek ski resort.
